In this first week we first carefully studied the brief as a group highlighting our most imortant considerations.
We chose a Hot, Dry site
We discussed what the building will probably require such as the two seperate environments, one private such as bedrooms, study etc and then the shared spaces such as a living room, kitchen, lounge room etc.
The next major factor was sustainability.
- Low Embodied Enery
- Local Materials preferably
- Minimalist (going on from the previous projects)
- Energy Efficient, relatively self-sustaining, using the regions natural attributes and designing our building to utilise these attributes. ie. rain, sun (heat and light), wind etc. to ensure a comfortable space while using little energy and water.
- Smart and safe disposal of waste
- Potential for growing our own food?
The next aspect we explored and brainstormed was potential solutions. We explored the pro and cons of one-storey, two-storey, underground and lastly a building made intirely of either discarded material or natural materials such as earth, bark etc.
We also discussed a few more issues. We aim to construct a building that not only work practically with the environment but which seemingly flows with the landscape. We also discussed the possiblity of tieing the building in with the regions strong indigenous heritage.
Our homework for the week was to come up with 3 designs each to discuss and develope in next week.
