COPACOBANA 6_TUTORIAL 2 NOTES

Hey guys,

well after the Tut last Friday there are some things to think about before we come to the next meeting.

1-we need to remember that the assignment is an extent ion of minima
2-need to make ideas less "house like"

but apart from that I thought we got some positive feedback and should continue on our path...

COPACOBANA 5_TUTORIAL REVIEW_LIZ WHITE

Hey guys...well a bit later than promised but here is the note I took from last Friday about your design ideas so far...

TIM

Idea 1
- building into the ground could be practical in climate zone
- idea of corrugated roof would not be practical...as you mentioned you realised on reflection
- problem of making it attractive to look at with minimal visibility of building
- the amount of movement your taking about with sails as shading could be too hard...a lot of effort

Idea 2
- 3 tier roof as shading device
- I liked what i heard...though you would need to be certain of actual orientation to argue you case

Idea 3
- the third idea's form was by far the most attractive to look at
- using a shell motif is interesting
- again the amount of movement of building parts could be impractical in the region etc

DAVID

Idea 1
- looked at on sloping site
- using an overhang in eaves a good solution to solar gain problem
- well though out with opening windows for cross ventilation
- lifted of ground for ventilation underneath is good for hot areas

Idea 2
- I liked the idea of using soil to cool...need to go further down than you were talking about though for this to work

Idea 3
- you didn't really give us much on this one...i think you had said you didn't like it.

Idea 4
- having an open balcony on top, shaded by a roof but not enclosed by walls is a nice idea
- also gives you a good place to position your solar panels

Idea 5
- using water evaporation and cross ventilation to cool the building is a great idea...though lack of water availability could be a problem

JOSH

Idea 1
- you had some good ideas...using thick walls, trees overlapping the roof for shade, solar power and rain collection

Idea 2
- i like the roof line in this idea...works well with the Australian landscape
- love the bird motif idea

Idea 3
- i like how you have positioned building underground with a "lizards back" protruding through surface - very strong concept
- cooling would be good

Idea 4
- i liked how your building was 1/2 underground and 1/2 above ground in the steep site you looked into

Idea 5
- good sustainability ideas.

Overall i think you guys should be able to come up with an excellent solution to your site
I would suggest looking into water storage and use and sun direction paths further

COPACOBANA 6_WEEK ONE DEVELOPMENT

Here are some of the sketches I've done for the first week...

So there is what I've been thinking, though I am not extremely happy with any of the designs I've come up with so far, but we can look at them together....

COPACOBANA 6_RESEARCH WEEK 1

Here are a few images that i found during my research that helped to inspire me, or had clever design solutions:

1. Abandoned pods in San Zhi, Taiwan

2. "Harnessing earth, wind and fire, the Eco-pods time has come"

3. The cool new face of coastal homes...Greg Jones putting a surprising new spin on Victorian seaside architecture...a house wearing Oakley's what a novel idea!

4. 'A to Z' living unit by Andrea Zittel, 1994

So there you go...until next time...

COPACOBANA 6_WEEK ONE MEETING

Here are the notes from our first meeting guys.

COMPLETED AT MEETING:
1. Our contract was written and signed
2. Decision to go cutting edge with design, with emphasis on sustainability made

TASKS:
1. Look into sustainable development
2. Look at current coastal projects
3. Develop a design or two, incorporating sustainable design and uniqueness.

Well thats all for now.

COPACOBANA 6_GROUP CONTRACT

Well i guess it would be useful to post our contract up to remind us all of what we agreed to...so here it is...

domus sketches__dan webster

Here's just a few sketches i did before last weeks tutorial.

Below is some of the notes which i took from the lecture last friday when Jeremy Ham was talking about our site.

group review of Dave, Tim and josh__dan webster

Josh, Tim and Dave:
Here's the page i wrote up on your groups progress. If any of them seem like i took notes...its actually what was good about the concept.

Contact - Tim, David and Josh

Hey boys sorry this has taken so long i haven't even had a change to put my own archi stuff up i'd better do it soon. This is the contract for our group, "group 5" with Josh Tim and David. It is sign sealed and devivered. Lets hope everything that come up of group is as pretty. lol

DOMUS_TUTORIAL 2_GROUP REVIEWS

hey all,

Well after Friday we should all have made notes at our meetings with another group. Just wanted to let Copacobana 5 (Josh, David and Tim) know that these comments will be posted on Monday night as soon as my group has got them all together.

I think it would be really useful for each group to post them up on the blog for the other group to get some feedback....possibly title them something like COPACOBANA 5_TUT 2 _REVIEW.

anyways until Monday

LEAVING COMMENTS_BY: DAVID CHUNG

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if it is better for all of our group members to actively leave comments on each other's work? I've browse thru other blogs and they leave their comments along when they are developing their ideas... I find that pretty useful, because it actually allows us to find out the flawed part of your idea and fix it along way before its too late.

And please feel free to leave some comments for my previous work, it would be a great help.. =)

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Hey all,

Dan & I went to Richard today to find out what exactly we are meant to be doing for this blog...so here it is.

1- all your work and communication is meant to be posted on this page (not your own blog, sorry if i told anyone different, I was confused myself)

2 - from now on this is to be used as a form of communication between team members for the Domus assignment (however you guys chose to do so as this will be how Richard checks up on our progress)

So make sure you post up your previous work from Minimal and Minima before weeks end so it doesn't get caught up between Domus posts that should be going up from now on.

Hope that answers any questions you all had.

MINIMA_REVIEW_LIZ WHITE

Well now that the review is over and marks are back its time I said how it went. Basically the review itself went really well. It appeared as though the tutors liked my concept and only had one comment on how to make my layout better.

I think though that the comments and the marks did not quite tally up. I would have liked the tutors to suggest how to improve my concept or presentation etc, whichever one it was that let down my grade, so I know how to improve for next time.

MINIMA_PRESENTATION_LIZ WHITE

OK my fellow bloggers...here it is...minus the picture of my model as i have lost my camera memory stick.

Poster 2:

Poster 3:

Well my thoughts on the review will follow later on...I hope you all have enjoyed looking at my work. Until next time...

MINIMA_WEEK FIVE_LIZ WHITE

Well I don't have too much to show you this week or it would ruin the final surprise...so you'll just have to hold your horses until next post!

MINIMA_WEEK FOUR_LIZ WHITE

Well, up to week four now...guess I'd better show you what I'm thinking for my design. First up ill put up some notes on Japanese architecture that are the principles behind my design...

Well from them I decided that the square design would fit best...

As you can see in the above image i very quickly worked out that i could get a larger box to fold out from a smaller cube. This idea i took and ran with...best represented on my poster through the 3d model.

To make the small cube - box idea work I have incorporated a bookshelf into the design which everything folds out of, or is stored in. Very Japanese don't you think. I have addresses the comfortable issue by using tatami mats on the base panel of my design. And now its up to the finishing stages...

MINIMA_WEEK THREE_LIZ WHITE

I decided i needed to do a lot more development of my ideas this week so I felt like I had a sound concept. First I had a play with the idea of Ikea boxes, coming out from each other.

While i really liked this idea, I had a feeling that because of it being mentioned in the tutorial several other group members may also look into it...Lucky I went away from it as my prediction was right! I do like the "film strip" idea mentioned by Sam (tutor) as a clever way of representing the demountability of our designs. So my next exploration was into the Charles Eames Armchair, also mentioned in the tutorial. This research led me into thinking about modular design.

While I like the forms i could develop through this method i be
lieve that the setting up/demounting of the design could prove too difficult to represent on a poster and model, hence I steered away from this idea. I also looked into "form following function" as a development tool to help me understand the spacial requirements of my minima.

After looking at from following function I did a bit of research into boat design. I decided I liked the way that boats have their wet areas set up for minimal space, so I will use this kind of set up for my minima.

The next thing I considered was how to enclose the minima, for this I looked into Japanese Architecture.

Here a a couple of the images I gained some inspiration from. Till next week then....

MINIMA_WEEK TWO_LIZ WHITE

So, after the first week I had a lot to think about... I have scanned in my notes from the last tutorial to give you an idea of how my mind was jumping around.

Once the last tutorial was over I spent some time analysing the site, what it
looked like, water levels etc, so I could choose a good place to place my Minima. You'll have to look at David's photo's untill I can post some of my own at a later date. From my drawings, photos and the time spent at the site I worked out where i wanted my Minima placed....

I decided to place my minima out on the pier, next to the 3rd bolard so i could gain the best views out to the ocien. More to come for next week....

Minima

MINIMA

Firstly sorry its taken so long, but as explained on our group blog...I'm silly. So, Minima, well what an experience. I think I'd be quite accurate in saying that in this one assignment I learnt more than in, perhaps, all the rest put together.

WEEK ONE

Well once the site was chosen by our gro
up I started to look at the bubble diagrams. I'm not sure how useful i found them to my working style, though they did highlight that most functions could be performed in the same space except the shower/toilet are would need separation of some form.

Coming into my first tutorial session I think I was fairly confident that I had a solid concept to work with. Well, was I wrong? The answer...YES. It was pointed out to me, quite accurately, by my tutor that i was basically neglecting half the requirements. From the "self containable, demountable, relocatable living capsule for one person" I had come up with a design for a box made from concrete blocks. Practical for this assignment...in retrospect...lets just say I'm glad I listened to my tutor and went in another direction.

Welcome to my Architecture Journey...

Hi all,

Welcome to my blog. Hope you can gain some insight into the inner workings of my designs, or at least give me some helpful hints to improve my work. I look forward to going through this journey with the great group that I have, and I'm sure we will all do a fantastic job on the projects to come. Well first off I'd like to apologise for my Minimal assignment not being posted, as well as any photos from my Minima assignment. I seem to have misplaced my memory card for my camera, so until I find it or can get a chance to photograph my work again my page will be photo less. Sorry guys.

FINALLY ONLINE...

Hey all my fellow bloggers,

well this is my first post as i have only just managed to get set up now. Turns out i forgot to accept Reece's invite into our blog. Silly me.

Well that's all for now...more to come soon
