COPACOBANA 5_TUTORIAL REVIEW_LIZ WHITE

Hey guys...well a bit later than promised but here is the note I took from last Friday about your design ideas so far...

TIM

Idea 1
- building into the ground could be practical in climate zone
- idea of corrugated roof would not be practical...as you mentioned you realised on reflection
- problem of making it attractive to look at with minimal visibility of building
- the amount of movement your taking about with sails as shading could be too hard...a lot of effort

Idea 2
- 3 tier roof as shading device
- I liked what i heard...though you would need to be certain of actual orientation to argue you case

Idea 3
- the third idea's form was by far the most attractive to look at
- using a shell motif is interesting
- again the amount of movement of building parts could be impractical in the region etc

DAVID

Idea 1
- looked at on sloping site
- using an overhang in eaves a good solution to solar gain problem
- well though out with opening windows for cross ventilation
- lifted of ground for ventilation underneath is good for hot areas

Idea 2
- I liked the idea of using soil to cool...need to go further down than you were talking about though for this to work

Idea 3
- you didn't really give us much on this one...i think you had said you didn't like it.

Idea 4
- having an open balcony on top, shaded by a roof but not enclosed by walls is a nice idea
- also gives you a good place to position your solar panels

Idea 5
- using water evaporation and cross ventilation to cool the building is a great idea...though lack of water availability could be a problem

JOSH

Idea 1
- you had some good ideas...using thick walls, trees overlapping the roof for shade, solar power and rain collection

Idea 2
- i like the roof line in this idea...works well with the Australian landscape
- love the bird motif idea

Idea 3
- i like how you have positioned building underground with a "lizards back" protruding through surface - very strong concept
- cooling would be good

Idea 4
- i liked how your building was 1/2 underground and 1/2 above ground in the steep site you looked into

Idea 5
- good sustainability ideas.

Overall i think you guys should be able to come up with an excellent solution to your site
I would suggest looking into water storage and use and sun direction paths further

Liz
